Understanding Direct and Indirect Managers

Understanding Direct and Indirect Managers

Teamgage uses your organisational hierarchy to determine which managers can access team results.
A manager can either be a Direct Manager of a team or an Indirect Manager through a parent team.

Direct Managers

A Direct Manager is assigned directly to a team.
Direct Managers:
  1. Can access the team's results
  2. Receive manager notifications for that team
  3. Can remind team members to submit feedback
  4. Can perform leader activities within the team

Indirect Managers

An Indirect Manager is a manager who inherits access through a parent team higher in the organisational hierarchy.
Indirect Managers:
  1. Can access the team's results
  2. Can remind team members to submit feedback
  3. Can view results across multiple teams
  4. Do not receive manager notifications for the child team
This allows senior leaders to maintain visibility across their areas of responsibility without receiving notifications from every team in the organisation.

Example

Consider the following organisational structure:
  1. Entire Organisation
    1. Operations
      1. Sales
        1. Customer Success
In this example:
  1. The manager of Customer Success is a Direct Manager of that team.
  2. The managers of Sales, Operations and Entire Organisation are Indirect Managers of Customer Success
As a result, all of these managers can access the Customer Success team's results, but only the Direct Manager receives manager notifications for that specific team.

How to Identify Direct and Indirect Managers

  1. Log into the Teamgage platform
  2. Go to Teams > Teams List from the left hand side navigation
  3. Search for the team name and click Edit
  4. Select the Managers tab
  5. Review the Inherited From column:
    1. Blank = Direct Manager
    2. Parent team listed = Indirect Manager
This makes it easy to understand who has direct responsibility for a team and who has inherited access through the organisational hierarchy.
